Runes are just a matter of kill the most monsters as fast as you can to get more runes to drop. There is also a cube recipe to add a random number of slots into an item. Larzuk in a5 sockets items one time per difficulty for his quest reward but the amount of sockets depends on the items quality and ilvl. There isn't really a method to finding socketed gear. Once you get to nm feel rerun bosses for drops as their drop table changes with each difficulty, and they can actually drop worthwhile things in NM.

You should also try to collect some items that have magic find % on them as this is the mechanic in d2 that will help you get better drops. The drops are spread out much, much more compared to D3.

Looking up some ladder start guides would be a good idea since you're essentially doing the same thing minus running for the leaderboard.

Just use the best you can find for normal mode. Are you playing on bnet or single player? Whichever you're doing is going to have a pretty big effect on the method you'll progress your characters.
